West Bengal Police's Special Task Force arrested Philip Sangma, a Bangladeshi national, on March 14, 2026, for allegedly helping two suspects—Faisal and Alamgir—illegally enter India through the Meghalaya border.
The suspects are linked to the December 12, 2025, murder of Bangladeshi activist Sharif Osman Hadi, a key figure in the 'July Uprising' that led to the fall of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government.
Hadi was shot in Dhaka and died in Singapore on December 18.
Sangma, described as a border tout, confessed to facilitating illegal crossings and was remanded in police custody after appearing in court.
His arrest follows intelligence-led operations and builds on the earlier detention of the suspects in Bongaon.
The case remains under investigation, with Bangladesh seeking consular access.
