UK grants Environment Agency police-like powers to fight waste crime, with new laws targeting illegal dumping and criminal networks.
The UK government is expanding powers for Environment Agency officers to combat waste crime, granting them police-like authority under PACE and POCA to make arrests, conduct warrantless searches, and seize assets.
This move, part of a new zero-tolerance Waste Crime Action Plan, aims to disrupt organized criminal networks behind illegal dumping, which costs £1 billion annually.
Since July 2024, the agency has secured 122 prosecutions, shut down 1,205 illegal sites, and secured 10 prison sentences.
New laws, pending parliamentary approval, could impose up to five years in prison for transporting or dealing in illegal waste.
The government is also enhancing cooperation with financial institutions to cut off criminals’ access to banking services and urging the public to report suspicious activity through Crimestoppers or the agency’s hotline.
