Campaigners, including Action to Protect Rural Scotland, have challenged the UK government’s claim that large data centre projects will create thousands of jobs, calling the estimates “hugely inflated” and “preposterous.” The group’s report says actual permanent on-site jobs are typically only 20 to 50 per facility, with most roles temporary or indirect.
Data from northern Virginia shows just three jobs per $100 million invested in data centres—far fewer than manufacturing’s 168 jobs.
The government defends its figures, stating they include broader economic benefits like supply chains and infrastructure development, arguing that rejecting such projects risks losing growth to overseas competitors.
