UK fraudster Shahnawaz Fiaz had his prison sentence reduced due to a legal error, despite admitting to a £720,000 Ponzi-like car fraud scheme affecting 41 victims.
A UK car dealer, Shahnawaz Fiaz, has had his six-year-nine-month prison sentence reduced after appealing his 2025 conviction for a £720,000 fraud conspiracy.
Fiaz, who fled to Denmark and was extradited in 2024, ran a fraudulent used car brokerage from 2016 to 2018, using deceptive sale-or-return agreements to keep vehicles and profits, funneling money from new victims to pay earlier ones in a Ponzi-like scheme.
The Court of Appeal ruled the original sentence was too harsh due to an error in combining penalties for two frauds, including a prior 2018 conviction.
The reduction was based on procedural error, not lack of guilt, and the court acknowledged harm to 41 victims.
