A South Carolina lobbyist was charged with attempted extortion for demanding $500,000 from a former client and threatening violence.
Joshua Nass, a 34-year-old lobbyist and licensed attorney from South Carolina, has been charged with attempted extortion for allegedly demanding $500,000 from a former client and his son.
Court documents say Nass, who previously lobbied for Joseph Schwartz—a man pardoned by Donald Trump for a $38 million nursing home tax fraud scheme—hired a confidential witness to intimidate the pair, including threats of physical assault and abduction.
The client had paid $100,000 toward a $600,000 fee and requested a payment plan, which Nass reportedly rejected as an insult.
Nass was arrested outside a New York hotel on the day he was set to meet the witness, released on a $5 million bond, and faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office declined to comment on any link to Schwartz’s pardon.
