Self Esteem warns that music industry inequality hinders emerging artists without financial privilege.
Self Esteem, the stage name of Rotherham-born musician Rebecca Lucy Taylor, has voiced concern over the widening privilege gap in the music industry, despite her recent breakthroughs including a UK top 10 album and a 2025 Ivors visionary award.
Speaking on BBC One, she said she worked multiple jobs to survive while building her career, highlighting that the industry no longer offers sufficient financial support for artists to develop their craft.
She noted that those with resources can afford to persist through failure, while others cannot, making it harder for emerging talent—especially without privilege—to gain visibility and succeed.
