Membertou First Nation says provincial and RCMP enforcement is unauthorized on its lands, citing treaty rights.
The Membertou First Nation in Nova Scotia has declared that provincial and RCMP enforcement agencies lack authority to operate on its lands, asserting its treaty right to self-governance over cannabis and tobacco sales.
The resolution, led by Chief Terry Paul, rejects recent raids on alleged illegal cannabis operations, calling them unlawful intrusions.
This follows a December directive from Nova Scotia Attorney General Scott Armstrong to increase enforcement, sparking tensions with Mi’kmaw communities, some of which have banned Premier Tim Houston and cabinet ministers from their territories.
While Armstrong acknowledged Paul’s leadership, he maintains provincial laws apply.
The province and RCMP have not commented.
