On March 15, 2026, Assam’s government signed peace agreements with four indigenous militant groups—the United Kukigam Defence Army, Kuki Revolutionary Army, Kuki Liberation Organisation, and Hmar People’s Convention-Democratic—marking the end of decades of ethnic militancy.
The deals establish Kuki and Hmar welfare and development councils in Guwahati with budgetary authority and focus on rehabilitation, education, economic opportunity, and cultural preservation.
Over 9,000 militants have been reintegrated since past peace efforts, and the groups surrendered over 1,000 weapons and tens of thousands of rounds of ammunition.
The move, described as “Assam’s Dawn of Peace,” comes ahead of the April 9 Assembly elections and is seen as a major step toward lasting stability.
