Ireland plans digital wallets for EU age verification, aiming to restrict under-16s from social media, with draft laws due in a month.
Ireland’s Tánaiste Simon Harris says a digital wallet, designed to securely store identity documents for EU-compatible age verification, is the next step toward enforcing potential social media age limits.
While no official age cap has been set, Harris personally believes children under 16 should not use social media, citing mental health concerns and comparing access to voting, drinking, and driving.
He expects draft legislation for the digital wallet to be presented to Cabinet within a month.
Harris also said Ireland, during its EU Council presidency, will prioritize child online safety and is building European support for coordinated action.
