Bangladesh to revise lottery school admissions for better equity and quality.
Bangladesh’s government is reviewing its lottery-based primary school admissions system, with Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon confirming changes ahead of the 2027 academic year.
The move follows criticism from lawmaker Hasnat Abdullah, who warned the shift from merit to random selection harms education quality, especially in crowded urban areas like Dhaka.
The minister acknowledged the lottery was introduced to ease overcrowding but said it may not be sustainable.
The government plans to consult stakeholders, including parents, and is working to unify diverse education streams—such as English-medium, Bangla-medium, madrasa, and Qawmi schools—under a national framework.
Ongoing efforts include infrastructure development, school feeding programs, and recruiting 9,000 religious teachers.
