Alberta removed over 200 books, including 2SLGBTQIA+ titles, from school libraries, sparking free expression concerns.
The Writers' Guild of Alberta has condemned the provincial government's removal of over 200 books, including graphic novels and classics with 2SLGBTQIA+ themes, from school libraries, calling it a serious breach of free expression.
Initiated in summer 2025 by Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides, the move followed concerns over sexually explicit content and pressure from the Christian group Action4Canada.
The guild warns the ban limits students' access to diverse perspectives, harms self-discovery, and disproportionately affects queer voices and visual learners, urging the government to reverse the policy.
