A 29-year-old horse named Dream was rescued from a creek near Belgrade, Montana, after falling off a bridge, marking the first major test for the Central Valley Fire District’s new large animal rescue program, developed with Hardaway Veterinary Hospital.
Firefighters and veterinarians used slings and ratchet straps to pull the hypothermic horse from icy water, providing on-site care including blankets, drying, and IV fluids.
After several days of treatment, Dream was alert, eating, and drinking normally.
The team credited prior training for their success and emphasized the program’s role in supporting animal owners and strengthening community ties, urging the public to call emergency services for large animal emergencies.
