The White House is proposing to build a 33,000-square-foot underground security screening center beneath Sherman Park, southeast of the White House and south of the Treasury building, to replace current visitor screening processes near Lafayette Park.
The facility, designed with seven lanes to reduce wait times, would be constructed in collaboration with the Executive Office of the President, U.S. Secret Service, and National Park Service, with construction possibly beginning in August 2026 and completion targeted for July 2028.
The monument to Union General William Tecumseh Sherman will remain in place.
The proposal is set for review by the National Capital Planning Commission at its April meeting, alongside plans for a separate 90,000-square-foot building.
