Wellington’s Central Library, now called Te Matapihi ki te Ao Nui, reopened after seven years of closure due to earthquake safety concerns, drawing thousands to a ribbon-cutting ceremony and community events.
The $217.6 million renovation, exceeding initial estimates, modernized the 1991 building with 3D printers, a CNC machine, digital studios, and cultural artwork by Māori artist Darcy Nicholas.
The adjacent Te Ngākau Civic Square also reopened with new landscaping and water features.
Mayor Andrew Little hailed the reopening as a milestone for the central city’s revitalization, with public turnout and usage rising significantly.
The nearby City Art Gallery is set to reopen later this year.
