Washington State board recommends clemency for man serving 30 years for 1996 murder and robbery.
The Washington State Clemency and Pardons Board has recommended clemency for Travis R. Comeslast, 50, who was convicted in 1997 for the 1996 first-degree murder and robbery of Christopher Gongyin during a home invasion.
Comeslast, who shot Gongyin in the head while the victim was asleep with his wife and infant child, has served nearly 30 years of a 46-year sentence.
The board voted 3-1 to recommend early release, citing his rehabilitation and leadership in prison, but the Spokane County Prosecutor and Gongyin’s widow oppose the move.
The final decision rests with Governor Bob Ferguson.
