The U.S. Air Force awarded Boeing $5.01 billion in sole-source contracts to develop the E-7A Wedgetail radar plane through 2032, replacing old E-3 Sentry aircraft.
The U.S. Air Force has awarded Boeing two sole-source contracts totaling $5.01 billion to advance the E-7A Wedgetail airborne early warning and control program, securing its development through 2032.
The largest $2.3 billion contract exercises an option for engineering and manufacturing development, while a $99.3 million award addresses supply chain risks for the aircraft’s radar system.
The E-7, based on the 737 NG and equipped with Northrop Grumman’s MESA radar, is intended to replace aging E-3 Sentry aircraft and supports critical battle management missions.
The contracts follow congressional pressure to sustain the program after prior cancellation attempts and come amid ongoing scrutiny of Boeing’s commercial aircraft quality.
Work will be conducted in Washington, Oklahoma, Alabama, and Ohio, with completion scheduled for August 2032.
