Supreme Court demands updated reports on illegal constructions along Ganga, citing stalled enforcement of 2016 environmental rules.
The Supreme Court has ordered the Union government and Ganga-adjacent states to submit updated reports on illegal constructions along the river’s banks and floodplains, citing outdated data and ongoing encroachments.
The directive, issued in a case from Patna involving 213 identified structures—58 removed, 145 remaining—follows concerns over stalled enforcement of a 2016 environmental notification aimed at protecting the river’s ecological integrity.
The court emphasized nationwide action, requiring states including Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, and others to detail progress, challenges, and future plans.
The matter is set for further hearing on April 23, 2026.
