Scotland pledges £10K homebuyers' deposit help to aid 50K households by 2026.
First Minister John Swinney has pledged up to £10,000 in deposit support for first-time homebuyers through a new £100 million First Homes Fund, aiming to help 50,000 households by the end of the next parliamentary session.
The plan, announced ahead of the May election, expands a previous pilot that assisted over 10,000 households between 2019 and 2022.
Swinney cited the cost-of-living crisis as making it nearly impossible for young people to save, often leaving them paying more in rent than a mortgage.
He blamed the Westminster-led economic model for failing this generation and suggested independence could offer a solution.
Scottish Labour’s housing spokesperson Mark Griffin dismissed the pledge as another empty promise, accusing the SNP of failing to act despite a 2024 housing emergency declaration and declining housebuilding.
