A rare, inscribed 1901 privately printed first edition of Beatrix Potter’s The Tale of Peter Rabbit, one of only 250 copies, is listed for $88,000 on Abebooks.com.
The book, in “very good” condition, bears a handwritten dedication from Potter to Mrs. Oliver dated Christmas 1901.
Originally a gift for a sick child, the story gained popularity after initial rejections, prompting Potter to self-publish.
Frederick Warne later released the first trade edition in 1902 with full-color illustrations, selling 8,000 copies before its official launch.
By 1903, over 56,000 copies were in circulation, and the book has since been translated into 45 languages with more than 45 million copies sold worldwide.
Potter’s deep ties to the Lake District inspired the stories’ settings.
The edition is considered exceptionally scarce and highly valuable to collectors.
