Pope Leo XIV has appointed Benedictine Father Godfrey Mullen as the new bishop of Belleville, Illinois, succeeding Bishop Michael McGovern, who was named archbishop of Omaha.
Mullen, a native of southern Illinois and monk at St. Meinrad Archabbey, has served as diocesan administrator since May 2025.
A priest since 1994, he has held roles as cathedral rector, professor of liturgy, and pastor.
