Oakland’s Ryan Coogler earns Best Director Oscar nod for "Sinners," which leads with 16 nominations—the most ever for a Black director’s film.
The Bay Area made a historic mark at the 98th Academy Awards, with Oakland native Ryan Coogler earning a Best Director nomination for "Sinners," which received a record 16 Oscar nods—the most ever for a film by a Black director.
The film also earned nominations for Best Picture, Best Original Song (Raphael Saadiq), and Best Supporting Actor (Delroy Lindo).
Cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw, raised in San Leandro and Danville, became the first woman of color nominated in Best Cinematography.
Other Bay Area-linked projects, including Pixar’s "Elio," also received recognition, underscoring the region’s rising influence in Hollywood.
The awards will air live on ABC and Hulu starting at 7 p.m.
