North Carolina now lets adults 18+ take driver’s license road tests at private schools to cut wait times.
North Carolina is expanding its driver’s license road test program to include adults 18 and older, allowing certified private driver education schools to administer tests for first-time Class C licenses.
Starting March 16, the program—previously tested with teens in 2025—offers an alternative to NCDMV offices, aiming to reduce wait times and office congestion.
Applicants who pass at a school must still complete licensing at an NCDMV office.
Each school sets its own fee, and individuals may still choose in-person testing.
The move supports agency efforts to modernize and streamline the licensing process.
