Jozef Puska, convicted in the 2022 murder of Ashling Murphy, gets more time to appeal, citing missed deadline; appeal challenges confession and CCTV evidence.
Jozef Puska, serving a life sentence for the 2022 murder of Ashling Murphy, has been granted extra time to respond to his appeal after his legal team missed a filing deadline by over a month.
The State has until April 14 to respond to the appeal, set for April 23–24, which challenges the admissibility of Puska’s confession—made while recovering from surgery and on pain medication—and CCTV footage showing him following two women before the killing.
The court approved a Slovakian interpreter for Puska, who claims he was attacked by a masked man.
Prosecution evidence included his DNA and fingerprints on the murder weapon and a bicycle found near the body, as well as Murphy’s DNA under his nails.
In June 2025, his brothers and their wives were convicted of obstructing justice.
No motive has been established, and there was no known connection between Puska and Murphy.
