Javonnie Tavener, 23, sentenced to 3.8 years for crashing while drunk and uninsured, killing 4-year-old Mayar Yahia in Birmingham, April 2024.
Javonnie Tavener, 23, was sentenced to three years and ten months in prison for causing the death of four-year-old Mayar Yahia in a crash on April 14, 2024, in Birmingham, while driving uninsured and under the influence of cannabis.
The incident occurred as Mayar and her family returned from Eid celebrations, when Tavener’s Vauxhall Corsa, speeding in a 20mph zone, struck pedestrians after attempting a dangerous overtaking maneuver.
Mayar died at the scene; her mother and another woman were seriously injured.
Tavener fled, lied about his involvement, and was later arrested.
He received an additional 18-month sentence for assaulting his girlfriend, with a six-year driving ban.
The case drew criticism over the Crown Prosecution Service’s decision to charge only with careless driving, limiting sentencing options despite the severity of the incident.
