India’s PM Modi gives land titles to 28,000 Assam tea workers, marking first legal ownership in 200 years.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the distribution of land deeds to approximately 28,000 tea garden workers in Assam, marking the first time in nearly 200 years that the community has received legal ownership of land and homes they’ve inhabited for generations.
The move, part of a broader initiative by the BJP-led government, aims to address a long-standing historical injustice, with over 3.5 lakh families eligible under amended land laws.
Modi credited the NDA government for advancing farmers’ welfare, citing wage hikes to ₹280 and ₹258 per day in the Brahmaputra and Barak Valleys, effective April 1, 2026, and the 22nd installment of the PM-KISAN scheme, transferring over ₹18,640 crore to more than 9.32 crore farmers.
He also inaugurated and laid foundations for projects worth over ₹4,570 crore in Kokrajhar, including railway and energy infrastructure.
