Canada funds study for new Woodland Cultural Centre facility in Brantford to preserve Indigenous heritage.
The federal government has allocated $67,766 to fund a feasibility study for a new facility for the Woodland Cultural Centre in Brantford, Ontario, as part of a $65 million campaign called "We Celebrate Our Stories."
The centre, located on the site of Canada’s first residential school, serves about 20,000 visitors annually and houses over 35,000 cultural artifacts.
The aging building, originally a classroom and gym from 1954, is no longer suitable for expansion.
The new facility would include studios, a kitchen for cultural programming, theatre spaces, and expanded storage.
A fundraising concert, "We Celebrate Our Music," is set for March 21 in Ohsweken to support the effort.
