Allahabad High Court strikes down Uttar Pradesh’s 20-person mosque prayer limit in Sambhal, citing religious freedom and lack of evidence.
The Allahabad High Court ruled against Uttar Pradesh’s restriction of mosque prayers in Sambhal during Ramadan, rejecting a limit of 20 worshippers as unjustified.
The court, led by Justices Atul Sreedharan and Siddharth Nandan, stated that authorities must ensure public order without infringing on religious freedom and told officials unable to manage such duties to resign or seek transfer.
It emphasized that prayer on private property does not require government permission and that restrictions must be evidence-based.
The case will be revisited on March 16, with the state required to respond and the petitioner to submit proof of the mosque’s location.
