Zambia and DRC to restart voluntary refugee returns, aided by UNHCR and improved DRC security.
Zambia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo have agreed to restart voluntary repatriation of Congolese refugees in Zambia, following talks in Lusaka and Kolwezi.
The governments committed to mobilizing resources, supporting reintegration, and sending a DRC delegation to assess refugees’ willingness to return.
UNHCR backed the effort, citing improved security in parts of the DRC as a key factor.
As of September 2025, Zambia hosted about 64,131 Congolese refugees, with roughly 11,523 having returned since 2023.
