A 7-year-old autistic boy escaped from his school through an unlocked window, ran on a busy road, and was hospitalized, leading his family to sue the school district for negligence.
A Lexington family has filed a lawsuit against Fayette County Public Schools after a 7-year-old nonverbal autistic boy escaped from Meadowthorpe Elementary School on November 17, 2025, climbing through an unsecured classroom window and running along New Circle Road, a busy construction zone, for nearly 20 minutes before being found by animal control.
The complaint alleges the school failed to install a window lock despite a prior request, did not use available emergency communication tools, and neglected to report the child missing, leading to a Child Protective Services finding of supervision neglect and threat of physical harm.
The boy, who was visibly distressed and hospitalized, is said to have suffered lasting injuries.
The lawsuit, filed on March 11, 2026, names the school board, superintendent, and multiple staff members, seeking over $75,000 in damages.
