Two Ukrainians sentenced to prison for smuggling migrants across the English Channel in 2026.
Two Ukrainian men, Vladyslav Cherniavskyi, 38, and Oleksandr Yavtushenko, 43, were sentenced to six and five years in prison on March 12, 2026, for running a people-smuggling operation across the English Channel using a yacht named Uforia.
The pair conducted at least eight crossings from northern France to the UK, transporting migrants including Albanian men and a young Vietnamese girl, charging up to £16,000 per trip.
The vessel was intercepted in July 2025 in a joint operation involving UK and French authorities.
Three Albanian men applied for asylum; the Vietnamese girl is in foster care.
Judge William Ashworth condemned the operation as a profit-driven exploitation of vulnerable people, and both men are expected to be deported after serving their sentences.
