Scotland's school strikes ended after a deal cut teacher workloads, but university staff strike over job cuts begins.
School strikes across Scotland have been called off after a deal was reached between the EIS, the Scottish government, and COSLA, securing a 90-minute weekly reduction in teacher contact time starting in 2027 for primary and ASN teachers, with secondary teachers following in 2029.
The agreement, funded by £40 million in 2026/27 and additional annual support for rural recruitment, aims to ease workloads and boost staffing.
EIS and government leaders hailed it as a major step toward improving education conditions.
Meanwhile, University of Strathclyde staff are set to begin a seven-day strike over 76 proposed job cuts, despite the university’s £528 million in reserves, with union leaders criticizing executive pay and lack of consultation.
