North Texas police seized $101.6M in fake luxury goods and arrested one suspect in a social media scam.
Police in North Texas seized over 62,000 counterfeit luxury items, valued at an estimated $101.6 million if authentic, in a multi-agency operation targeting a social media-based scam involving Facebook Live.
The investigation began February 9 after a tip and led to the February 17 arrest of Orlando Gonzales-Marcella, who faces a first-degree felony charge for trademark counterfeiting exceeding $300,000.
Authorities also recovered $208,000 in cash, a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado, and are seeking Aida Karina Lopez Alvarrez, who remains at large.
Agencies involved include the Rowlett Police Department, Texas Department of Public Safety, Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office, and Homeland Security Investigations, with support from anti-counterfeit experts at major luxury brands.
