Nigeria warns 11 northern states of meningitis outbreak due to dry, dusty weather; vaccination and hygiene urged.
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has warned of a heightened risk of cerebrospinal meningitis in 11 northern states—Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Adamawa, Gombe, Bauchi, Yobe, and Borno—due to dry, dusty weather.
The bacterial disease, caused by Neisseria meningitidis, spreads through respiratory droplets and can be life-threatening if untreated.
Symptoms include sudden high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, vomiting, and light sensitivity.
NiMet urges vaccination, good hygiene, avoiding crowded spaces, and immediate medical care for symptoms, especially for children, young adults, and those in vulnerable environments.
Central states are advised to exercise caution, while southern states are considered low risk.
