Indian court denies bail to 46-year-old accused in scheme trafficking youth to Laos for cyber fraud.
The Bombay High Court has denied bail to Jerry Philips Jacob, 46, accused of masterminding a scheme that lured educated Indian youth with promises of overseas jobs, only to traffic them to Laos and force them into cyber fraud operations.
The NIA alleges Jacob orchestrated a network that deceived victims into working in fake call centers, scamming people in the U.S. and U.K. through cryptocurrency schemes.
The court found sufficient evidence of human trafficking, fraud, and coercion, noting the organized nature of the crime and concerns over flight risk.
Victims were reportedly held against their will, had passports seized, and were rescued by local authorities before being repatriated.
The case remains under investigation under multiple Indian laws.
