H5N1 avian flu A3 killed 18 marine mammals in California, first outbreak in state’s marine life.
A highly pathogenic H5N1 avian flu strain, known as A3, has caused deaths in at least 18 marine mammals—including elephant seals, sea otters, and sea lions—along California’s San Mateo County coast, marking the first confirmed outbreak in marine mammals in the state.
The virus, which originated in Eurasia and spread via the Pacific Flyway, was first detected in February in 16 elephant seal pups at Año Nuevo State Park, with additional cases in a sea otter and sea lion.
Testing continues, but all confirmed cases remain confined to the area.
Researchers say the strain has a mutation that enhances mammal-to-mammal transmission.
Authorities have canceled guided tours, closed viewing areas, and urge the public to avoid wildlife and report sightings to NOAA.
