Florida lawmakers passed a bill banning local DEI programs and Pride events, awaiting governor’s signature.
Florida lawmakers have passed SB 1134, a bill that would ban local governments from funding or promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, including support for LGBTQ+ Pride events.
The measure, approved 77-37 in the House and 25-11 in the Senate, now awaits Governor Ron DeSantis’ signature.
If signed, it would allow the governor to remove local officials who support DEI efforts, prohibit DEI offices, and permit citizens to report violations.
Critics warn the law’s broad language could undermine minority and women-owned business programs, community events, and local autonomy, while supporters argue it prevents ideological overreach and taxpayer waste.
The law, set to take effect January 1, 2027, reflects ongoing state efforts to restrict DEI programs, following a 2023 ban at public colleges.
Los legisladores de Florida aprobaron un proyecto de ley que prohíbe los programas locales de DEI y los eventos del Orgullo, a la espera de la firma del gobernador.
