Europol-led operation shut down global "SocksEscort" network hijacking 369K routers, disrupting cybercrime and freezing $3.5M in crypto.
A major international cybercrime network, dubbed "Lightning" and led by Europol, dismantled a global proxy system called "SocksEscort" that hijacked over 369,000 private routers—especially older models with security flaws—across multiple countries.
The operation, involving law enforcement from Austria, France, the Netherlands, and the U.S., shut down 27 domains and seven command-and-control servers, froze $3.5 million in cryptocurrency, and disrupted illegal activities including the distribution of child abuse material.
Authorities urged users to replace compromised devices and update firmware to prevent future breaches.
