An Angolan asylum seeker’s 2024 denial was overturned by Ireland’s High Court, which ruled trauma-related memory lapses shouldn’t undermine his claim of government-linked killings.
An Angolan man seeking asylum in Ireland had his June 2024 refusal overturned by the High Court, which ruled the Immigration and Protection Appeals Tribunal (IPAT) erred in law by unfairly questioning his credibility over inconsistencies in his account of a 2018 attack.
He claimed government forces linked to Angola’s MPLA party killed his parents during a raid on their home, targeting him and his father for their involvement with the separatist FLEC.
The court found it unjust to penalize him for memory lapses due to trauma, noting he consistently stated both parents were killed.
The case was sent back to a different IPAT panel for reconsideration.
