The U.S. State Department will permanently close its consulate in Peshawar, Pakistan, its closest diplomatic mission to the Afghan border, citing $7.5 million in annual savings and no harm to U.S. national interests.
The move, part of a broader federal downsizing effort initiated under the Trump administration and under review for over a year, will relocate consular services to the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad and consulates in Karachi and Lahore.
The Peshawar consulate, which employed 18 U.S. and 89 local staff, served as a key operations hub for overland access to Afghanistan and a point of contact for U.S. citizens and Afghan nationals.
Closing costs will total $3 million, including $1.8 million to relocate armored trailers used as temporary offices.
The State Department confirmed that all core missions, including citizen assistance and foreign aid oversight, will continue uninterrupted.
