Senegal’s National Assembly has passed a law doubling the maximum prison sentence for same-sex relations to 10 years, reclassifying such acts as “against nature” and imposing fines up to 10 million CFA francs.
The bill, backed by Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko and President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, also criminalizes promoting or financing LGBTQ causes and prohibits false accusations.
It passed with 135 votes in favor and three abstentions, reflecting broader regional trends of tightening anti-LGBTQ laws across Africa.
Human rights groups have condemned the measure, warning it could increase persecution and discrimination.
The law awaits final presidential approval.
