flag RCMP officers acted appropriately in Tyrone Simard’s fatal crash after he stabbed eight people; no charges recommended.

Manitoba’s police watchdog has found no fault with RCMP officers in the death of Tyrone Simard, a 26-year-old man who stabbed eight people, including his sister, on Hollow Water First Nation in September before crashing his vehicle into a police cruiser at about 187 km/h. Investigators concluded Simard’s actions were intentional or reckless, he was not wearing a seatbelt, and made no effort to slow down. Toxicology results showed high levels of alcohol and cocaine in his system. The officer in the cruiser was seriously injured and not interviewed to protect her well-being. The report, based on video, audio, medical, and traffic data, found Simard was responsible for his own death and recommended no charges.
