Pakistan canceled 4.2 million CNICs for deceased people to fix identity data, with options to restore IDs and boost child registrations.
Pakistan’s National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) has canceled 4.2 million CNICs linked to individuals recorded as deceased in provincial civil registration systems, following a nationwide effort to reconcile death records with the national database.
The move, authorized under the NADRA Ordinance, aims to improve data accuracy and prevent identity misuse.
Around 3 million families had already voluntarily canceled CNICs for deceased relatives.
Those affected by mistaken cancellations can restore their IDs through biometric verification at local offices.
Nadra also launched an SMS campaign to encourage registration of 14 million children whose births were recorded locally but not yet in the national system, expanding access to B-Forms via its e-Sahulat franchise network.
