Officers used justified force during a 2024 arrest in Tiniroto after suspect resisted and appeared to reach for a weapon; no weapon found.
Police have confirmed an Independent Police Conduct Authority report concluding officers were justified in using force during the December 14, 2024, arrest of a man, Mr Z, in Tiniroto, Tairāwhiti.
Officers responded to a stolen vehicle report, pursued Mr Z briefly, then confronted him after he resisted arrest and appeared to reach into the passenger footwell.
Believing he was accessing a firearm, officers used tasers, a police dog, and physical force.
No weapon was found.
The IPCA found the response reasonable and proportionate, and Eastern District Commander Superintendent Joel Lamb commended the officers’ split-second decisions.
Mr Z recovered fully from injuries.
The report was released March 11, 2026.
