flag Kosovo’s AKR party suspended for missing election deadline; 45-day reprieve to hold convention.

The Central Election Commission (CEC) has suspended Kosovo’s Aleanca Kosova e Re (AKR) for failing to hold required internal elections by February 25, 2026, as mandated by law. The party’s acting chairman, Vesel Makolli, said the delay stemmed from last year’s overlapping local and national elections and that AKR had requested a four-month extension, which was denied. The CEC gave AKR 45 days to hold its convention, after which its suspension may be lifted if elections occur. The party remains operational and can still run on the LDK list in future elections. The suspension was approved during a CEC meeting chaired by Kreshnik Radoniqi.
