Harvard returns 1,850 enslaved people’s daguerreotypes to Charleston museum after legal fight.
Harvard University has returned 1850 daguerreotypes of seven enslaved individuals—including Renty and his daughter Delia—to the International African American Museum in Charleston, South Carolina, after a seven-year legal battle.
The images, taken by a Harvard biologist for racist research, were used to justify slavery and long held by Harvard, which resisted their return due to unconfirmed lineage.
The settlement in 2025 followed a lawsuit by Tamara Lanier, who claims descent from Renty and argued Harvard profited from licensing the photos.
The museum, located at Gadsden’s Wharf—the site where nearly half of enslaved Africans arrived in the U.S.—will preserve the originals and display reproductions in an exhibit honoring the subjects’ lives.
The return is seen as a symbolic act of justice and historical reckoning.
