Fiji may see over 2,000 new HIV cases in 2026 due to rising drug use and undiagnosed infections.
Fiji’s Assistant Minister for Health, Penioni Ravunawa, warned that the country could face over 2,000 new HIV infections in 2026, with cumulative cases rising from 3,660 in 2024 to 5,676 in 2025 and new infections surging from 415 to 1,583 in just one year.
He cautioned that nearly 9,000 people may be living with HIV, with many cases undiagnosed, and linked the rise to increasing drug use and needle sharing, especially among young adults.
Ravunawa stressed the urgent need for national unity, prevention efforts, and stronger health system support to curb the epidemic’s spread and long-term financial burden.
