Washington awarded $2.3M in grants to Kent and Black Diamond for police hiring, requiring local funding and compliance with state standards.
Washington has awarded its first grants from a $100 million police hiring initiative, giving Kent $1.9 million and Black Diamond $375,000 to hire officers and fund training and technology.
The program, launched at Governor Bob Ferguson’s request, requires departments to adopt a 0.1% sales tax or have dedicated public safety funding and meet state standards on training and data collection.
Only nine departments have applied so far, with uptake slowed by administrative hurdles.
Kent will use funds to fill vacancies and prepare for retirements, while Black Diamond will hire one officer to keep up with population growth.
Grants cover up to 75% of salaries and benefits, must be spent by mid-2028, and further funding decisions are expected soon.
