UK police demand tech firms disable stolen phones by June 1 or face laws.
London's Metropolitan Police chief Sir Mark Rowley has demanded tech giants make stolen phones unusable by June 1, warning that without action, the UK government will introduce mandatory legislation.
He cited rampant theft, global resale—especially in China—and the use of stolen devices to exploit children, stressing that default anti-theft measures, real-time global blocking, and stricter IMEI controls are needed.
Only 2% of London’s over 587,000 stolen phones since 2017 have been recovered.
