UK bans London's Al Quds Day march over public safety concerns, citing terrorism, antisemitism risks, and unrest.
The UK Home Secretary has approved a Metropolitan Police request to ban the annual Al Quds Day march in London, the first such ban since 2012, citing risks of serious public disorder due to the event’s scale, ongoing Middle East tensions, and planned counter-protests.
Authorities cited past incidents involving arrests for terrorism support and antisemitic hate crimes linked to the march, organized by the Islamic Human Rights Commission (IHRC), which has expressed support for Iran’s late leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
While the IHRC called the ban a blow to free expression and emphasized the event’s long peaceful history, the government stressed it does not target political views but prioritizes public safety.
The move has drawn support from MPs and anti-hate groups, who see it as necessary to prevent hate-fueled unrest.
Static demonstrations may still occur under strict police conditions.
