Starting April 6, 2026, UK self-employed and landlords earning over £50K must use digital software to report income quarterly to HMRC.
Starting April 6, 2026, nearly one million UK self-employed individuals and landlords earning over £50,000 annually must use approved software to keep digital records and submit quarterly updates to HMRC under the Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax initiative.
The updates are part of a continuous reporting process, not separate tax returns, and will streamline the annual tax return due by January 31, 2028.
HMRC is offering free guidance, webinars, and software options, with exemptions available for those unable to use digital tools.
The change aims to improve accuracy and reduce last-minute record-keeping stress.
